$Big Tex, 55-foot-tall statue and marketing icon of the annual State Fair of Texas held at Fair Park in Dallas, Texas. The figure has become a cultural icon of Dallas and Texas. On October 19, 2012, THIS Big Tex was destroyed by an electrical fire that started in the in the right boot and worked its way up the structure. It was replaced a "new" Tex. Neon sign outside a bar -- not Billy Bob's, which is a separate night club and dance hall nearby -- in the Stockyards District of Fort Worth. The neighborhood celebrates a former livestock market that operated under various owners from 1866. Today the Stockyards consist of mainly entertainment and shopping venues that capitalize on the "Cowtown" image of Fort Worth. They are the last standing stockyards in the United States. Sanctuary of the Nativity of Mary, Blessed Virgin Catholic Church, also known as the St. Mary Catholic Church, in High Hill, a little community near Schulenberg in Fayette County, Texas. This is considered the "queen" of what Texans call their "painted churches." Its decorative paintings were executed by Ferdinand Stockert and Hermann Kern in 1912. There was a time when the signs for every decent motel in Tucson shimmered in neon vibrance along the “Miracle Mile” entryway into town. Now all but a handful of them are dark or gone from those days when riding the “open road” was often a family adventure. The 1940s-vintage Tropicana “motor hotel” is long gone, but its sign and three more were rescued, rehabilitated, relocated, and put back on display in 2014 near the downtown campus of Pima Community College.
